[DEMADO PROJECT] vol.6 Ryoko Kimura + Masako Yasuki "The Birds Lose Their Form after Their Colors"

The 6th exhibition of DEMADO CONTEMPORARY ART PROJECT showcases a collaborative work by Ryoko Kimura and Masako Yasuki. This exhibition is titled "The Birds Lose Their Form after Their Color" after a sentence that appears in Andre Breton's novel, "Soluble Fish (Poissson Soluble)." The exhibition period will be from January 10 through February 17, 2013.

This show functions as a related program of a group show titled "Soluble Fish" that takes place around the same time in Kyoto, at Kyoto Seika University Gallery Fleur and Gallery Parc, in which Kimura and Yasuki participate and show some collaborative paintings. "Soluble Fish" is an exhibition where 12 Japanese artists attempt at tackling surrealism in a contemporary context and experimenting with the notion of "beyond reality" or "continuation of reality."

"The Birds Lose Their Form after Their Colors" shares the same theme as "Soluble Fish" exhibition, and by staging an encounter of two very different painters within a small window frame, we expect something unexpected to happen, which was the very idea the surrealists particularly treasured.

The two artists will be present at the opening reception on January 11th, from 5:00 pm.

Japanese photographic artist Toshiyuki Nanjo's first overseas solo exhibition will be held in Seoul, Korea in November.

Nanjo has been in recent years working on creating photographic works that capture the traces of sunlight reflected on water surface such as river or stream. Through his stoic but sensitively beautiful works, he poses fundamental questions related to our perception, vision, and understanding. We hope that this show will throw a fresh light upon the entangled relationship between photography and our act of seeing.

[DEMADO PROJECT] vol.5 Kaori Tanaka "Moonlight Mountain"

The 5th exhibition for DEMADO CONTEMPORARY ART PROJECT will showcase the work of Kyoto-based painter Kaori Tanaka.

Tanaka's main source of inspiration is traditional Japanese gardens, typically seen in Zen temples. For this show Tanaka draws the motif from the famous Ginkaku temple (Silver Pavillion) in Kyoto and the moon-viewing platform in its garden, and creates a three-dimensional display within a frame of Demado window gallery, making the view somewhat reminiscent of a Tokonoma alcove. The work will be put on display from June 23rd through August 19th, 2012.

The artist will be present at the opening reception on June 23rd, from 5:00 pm. Handmade accessories created by the artist will also be exhibited and sold at the reception.

[EXHIBITION] Group exhibition "Building a Castle of Sand (or Braeking It)" in Seoul in February

A group exhibition titled "Building a Castle of Sand (or Breaking It): Art from Aichi" will be held at Next Door Gallery in Seoul in January 2012.

This exhibition will showcase the works of four artists, Hisashi Kurachi, Ayako Kurihara, Nobuyuki Osaki, and Noriyori Shirakawa, all of whom are either once studied at the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, or currently teach at the University as professor or lecturer.
Through this exhibition we aim at introducing contemporary art from Aichi in Seoul, where they receive art-related information mainly from Tokyo, showing the dynamism and diversity in Japanese art scene, as well as opening up a new channel of information of art education between art education in Japan and Korea.

These four artists share a keen sensitivity towards "uncertainty of reality" or "unreality of what can be seen," and the phrase in the title "castle of sand" represents their basic attitude of facing the world or the illusion. We hope that this exhibition will play a role in redefining the relationship between"virtuality" and "reality" that is inherent in visual art.
